Ondo's Tokenized Stocks TVL Lead, By the Numbers
Ondo's tokenized stocks TVL crossed $1.01 billion in August, roughly eight months after its Global Markets product launched in September 2025, and Ondo itself says — citing RWA.xyz data — that it now holds more than 70% of the tokenized-equity issuer market. That's a fast climb by any RWA standard: stablecoins took three years to reach their first $1 billion, and tokenized Treasuries took about 18 months to get there. Ondo did it in under a year, spread across more than 440 tickers of tokenized US stocks and ETFs. On the surface, that reads like a settled question — Ondo won tokenized equities. It's Tuesday, and ONDO the token is trading around $0.38-0.39, up 3-4% on the day and about 16.2% over the past week, riding the same broad crypto squeeze that's lifted most majors since August 19. It's still down more than 80% from its $2.14 all-time high, which suggests the market hasn't fully credited this TVL story yet, or doesn't think it's decisive.
Is TVL Even the Right Metric?
TVL measures how much money is sitting inside Ondo's tokenized-stock wrappers, not how much of it is actually trading. On that second measure, the picture splits. Binance's bStocks product holds about $622 million in TVL, well behind Ondo's $1 billion-plus, but somewhere between 47% and 62% of its own trading volume happens outside standard US market hours and on weekends — exactly the window where a 24/7 tokenized wrapper should have the biggest edge over a stock exchange that's closed. Kraken's xStocks sits close behind bStocks at roughly $600 million. Between the three of them, Ondo, bStocks and xStocks now account for about 77% of the tokenized-equity market, according to The Block's August 17 market-share breakdown, itself a sign the sector is consolidating around a handful of serious players. But "who holds the most assets" and "who actually processes the trades" are different questions, and Ondo currently wins one while losing the other. If trading volume is what eventually converts into fee revenue, Binance's distribution edge matters more than the TVL headline suggests.
The Real Consolidation Move: Kraken Buys Backed Finance
While Ondo's TVL number was making headlines, the more consequential deal in tokenized stocks had already happened months earlier: Kraken agreed to acquire Backed Finance, the Swiss issuer that actually creates the xStocks tokens Kraken distributes, back in December 2025, and has since folded it fully into its platform. That's vertical integration — the exchange now owns its own issuance layer instead of relying on a third party, closing the same kind of gap Ondo has been building organically since launch. It's a signed, confirmed deal, not a rumor, and it targets the exact part of the market Ondo dominates: who issues the tokenized shares in the first place. If distribution (Binance) and issuance (Kraken-Backed) keep integrating vertically around it, Ondo's 70%-plus issuer share becomes a lead worth watching rather than one that's locked in.
Is Ondo Really Buying a $500M Wealthtech Firm?
Reports since July 29-30 have floated Ondo weighing an acquisition worth $250-500 million, and it's tempting to read that as Ondo moving to defend its tokenized-stock position. It isn't. The reporting describes an early-stage, adviser-less exploration with no named target, and Ondo has publicly denied being in active talks. More importantly, the rumored deal sits in wealthtech distribution, not tokenized-equity infrastructure — it wouldn't touch the TVL or trading-volume competition described above even if it happened. Treat this as unconfirmed chatter the company itself has downplayed, not as evidence Ondo is moving to defend its lead.
The Governance Fight Nobody's Pricing In
Underneath all of this sits a problem that has nothing to do with tokenized stocks. Ondo Finance's founder, Nathan Allman, died unexpectedly in late May. In early August, his mother filed a Delaware lawsuit seeking to remove current CEO Ian De Bode, alleging he wasn't validly appointed to the role. That fight is unresolved. It's easy to miss because it doesn't show up in TVL charts, but a company mid-lawsuit over who is legally running it isn't well positioned to move decisively on product roadmap or M&A, wealthtech rumor included. If this drags on, it's arguably a bigger risk to Ondo's competitive position than anything Binance or Kraken does.
What This Means Going Forward
The likely near-term path is that Ondo keeps its TVL and issuer-share lead simply on breadth — 440-plus tickers is a hard head start to erase quickly — and on the momentum of being first to scale. But "winning tokenized stocks" is no longer a clean claim once you separate assets parked from trades executed, and Coinbase just added a third serious competitor by launching its own tokenized-stock product on Base on August 24. Worth watching: whether Binance's trading-volume dominance keeps widening even as Ondo's TVL grows, whether Kraken's newly in-house issuance lets it undercut Ondo on fees or speed, and whether the Delaware suit resolves cleanly or drags into the fall. A quick, uncontested resolution in De Bode's favor would remove the biggest wildcard; a prolonged fight is the more likely reason Ondo's lead narrows, not anything happening on the wealthtech acquisition front.
