Bitcoin's price today squeeze story took a hard turn on Friday: BTC punched to a fresh multi-month high above $81,000 that morning, then reversed to a session low near $76,888 within hours after Fed Chair Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole debut, and it's now changing hands around $78,000 as traders work out whether last week's break above $80K was real demand or just a squeeze that ran out of fuel. The round trip erased almost the entire week's gain in a single session, and it's the clearest test yet of what's actually holding this rally up.
Bitcoin's Price Today: Was It Just a Squeeze?
Start with what actually happened. Bitcoin is down roughly 3.2% over 24 hours, having round-tripped from Friday morning's high near $81,479 down to $76,888 before clawing back to the high-$77,000s. Zoom out and the 30-day trend is still sharply higher — BTC is up more than 20% from its pre-squeeze base near $62,000-$67,000 in late July, well above both its 50-day moving average ($66,765) and its 200-day average ($69,300). So the broader uptrend is intact. What's in question is the last leg of it.
That leg began with the August 19-23 short squeeze, when an estimated $2.7-4 billion in leveraged short positions got forcibly liquidated, mechanically driving price up through $67,000-$77,000. That's a demand-side illusion by design: forced buying from shorts covering, not fresh conviction. What's notable is what happened next. Futures open interest fell to a five-month low and funding rates stayed modest, around 5% annualized, even as price pushed on to a new high above $81,000 this week. That's a genuinely deleveraged market — the opposite of the overheated setup that usually precedes a blowoff top. A clean market should be able to absorb a shock. This one couldn't.
Why the Rally Stalled at Jackson Hole
The dominant driver of Friday's reversal is Warsh's keynote itself. His "we have work to do" line on inflation, delivered in his first Jackson Hole appearance as Fed Chair, read as a rejection of the rate-cut optimism markets had been pricing in, and risk assets sold off within the hour — bitcoin, gold and equities all took the same hit. The mechanism is straightforward: a hawkish Fed reduces the odds of near-term rate cuts, which raises the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset like bitcoin and pressures the same "debasement trade" — the idea that expanded Treasury bond buybacks pulling yields lower makes scarce assets more attractive — that had helped fuel the mid-August rally in the first place. Warsh's tone is a direct counter-signal to that trade, which is exactly why gold sold off in sympathy on the same day.
The fact that a deleveraged, non-overheated market still gave up nearly all of a week's gain on one speech is the key data point. It suggests the market's tolerance for bad macro news hasn't actually improved just because the leverage got flushed out — there simply wasn't enough underlying demand yet to absorb it.
Is the ETF Inflow Streak Enough to Rebuild Demand?
Here's the case for real demand underneath the noise. Spot bitcoin ETFs have now logged nine straight days of net inflows through Thursday, averaging roughly $242 million a day and topping $3 billion for August alone. That streak didn't break stride during Friday's selloff — flows kept coming even as price fell. That's genuine, patient institutional buying, and it's the strongest evidence that this cycle isn't purely speculative.
But the streak also didn't stop the reversal, and that's the more important half of the story. ETF flows are acting as a floor-builder — a source of steady, background demand — not yet a price-setter that can absorb a same-day macro shock. Whether that changes now depends on whether the streak survives the weekend and into next week. If it snaps, that's a signal real conviction is thinner than the headline numbers suggested. If it extends through the Warsh selloff unscathed, that's a genuine sign of resilience.
The Technical Picture After Friday's Reversal
Bitcoin had been repeatedly failing at a resistance shelf in this zone since May, finally broke above it this week, then reversed back below it on the same day it printed a new high — turning a shelf that looked like confirmed resistance into a live, undecided level. Price is now sitting between Friday's low near $76,888 and the psychological $78,000 mark, below both the $79,500 swing high from August 21 and the $81,273 high from August 25. The 7-day volume-weighted average price sits around $78,588, just above current spot — a sign the market has yet to convincingly reclaim even its own recent average, let alone the highs.
Base Case, Bull Case, Bear Case
The base case is choppy, range-bound trade below $81,000 in the near term while the market digests the hawkish repricing. There's no fresh squeeze fuel left — open interest is already low — so any renewed move up would have to come from actual buying rather than forced short-covering, and that takes longer to build.
The bull case: the ETF streak extends through next week, the debasement trade reasserts itself if yields ease again, and Warsh's line gets reread as symposium rhetoric rather than a genuine hawkish pivot. With short interest already thin, any fresh conviction could still move fast in the other direction.
The bear case: the next CPI and jobs prints, ahead of the mid-September FOMC meeting, confirm Warsh's inflation concern, rate-cut odds get pushed out further, the ETF streak actually breaks, and Friday's risk-off spreads from equities and gold into a deeper crypto drawdown.
The next one to two trading days — whether the ETF streak extends or snaps, and whether other Fed speakers walk back or reinforce Warsh's tone — will do more to answer the demand-versus-squeeze question than anything that's happened so far this month.
